Natural Healing Before and After Surgery

At some point in life, a form of surgery may be necessary. Surgery is extremely taxing on the body, and depending on how invasive, it can keep you off your feet for days, weeks, if not months. Healing from surgery can be challenging, but there are important and effective natural ways that you can take to speed up your healing time dramatically.

For many surgical procedures, it is recommended that you do not take any supplements that thin the blood for a week or more before the surgery. Beyond that, recommendations on how to best prepare your body for this immense challenge it is about to face, are usually not addressed.

Pre-surgical Recommendations (At Least 2 Weeks Before Surgery)

1. Eat a strict anti-inflammatory diet. Cut out all sugar, eat a maximum of 2 servings of fruit per day. Berries are the best as they are super high in anti-oxidants, and they are very low in sugars.

2. No processed foods or starchy foods. This includes not having bread, white rice, nor white potato. Also, no dairy, as dairy is very inflammatory. If you are concerned about calcium, eat cauliflower and sesame seeds.

3. Do some form of cardiovascular exercise for 40 minutes, four times per week. Since you will probably be out of commission for a bit, it is a good idea to get oxygen to all of your cells and to give your heart a boost. Don’t exceed your maximum heart rate, which is 180 minus your age. Using a heart monitor may be necessary, so you stay within range. Some cardiovascular machines at the gym have built-in heart monitors. Ultimately, you don’t want to be sedentary just before surgery.

4. Certain supplements are helpful to prevent adhesions and lessen scarring. Dermatrophin Pmg, Chlorophyll complex, Epithalamin factors, Horsetail, and Silica, are just some of the supplements that can help to prepare the body and also prevent adhesions and scaring.

Post Surgical Recommendations

1. Try to get some quality food smuggled into your hospital room. Most hospitals give patients sugary juices and very low-quality food post surgery. High protein foods are important right after surgery, but your stomach may not be able to handle the bulk. I recommend getting a good quality protein shake like Veg-E Complete Pro by Standard Process or a high-quality meal replacement like Sp Complete Dairy Free. Have at least two shakes per day. The body requires high-quality protein for healing.

2. Supplements for repair and healing. Dermatrophin Pmg and Gotu Kola Complex help to repair soft and connective tissue. Both of these speed up the healing time dramatically. CBS Formula, MT supreme, Livco, and Silymarin can help the body to detoxify from anesthesia. Horse Chestnut Complex can help with lymphatic drainage and swelling. Bromelain, CBD oil, and Curcumin/Tumeric help with inflammation and pain and can offset the need for heavy-duty pain medications.

3. Drink lots of filtered water. Drink half your body weight in water plus 10 ounces to help flush the body from anesthesia.

4. Deep breathing exercises. Breathe deeply to get oxygen to your cells. The yoga style of breathing called Alternate Nostril Breathing is excellent for healing and restoring balance to the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

5. Treat your scar. Once your wound is closed and you get the okay from your doctor, treat your scar topically with one or some of the following:  sea buckthorn oil, helichrysum oil, vitamin E oil, borage oil, wheat germ oil, or sesame oil. All of these can help scar tissue to normalize and heal properly. Cold lasers also work well in helping the scar, and the underlying tissue injury heal.

6. Bodywork to help with healing. As soon as you feel up to it and get the okay from your doctor, get bodywork to help with lymphatic drainage and mobility issues. Mobility and drainage may be compromised after surgery, because of trauma and a prolonged period of being sedentary. Gentle chiropractic care, acupuncture, lymphatic drainage massage, craniosacral therapy, and myofascial release are essential to get your body back to its optimum level of functioning.
